Virgin Atlantic Pilot Chris Hall was so moved by the distressing scenes he had seen on the news caused by Covid-19 in India that he decided to fundraise for oxygen concentrators to help with Emergency relief which he flew out to the country himself.

“Every now and again something rattles your cage just a little bit,” Mr Hall, 59, told the PA news agency.

“In the story of this pandemic what we’re seeing in India is probably the thing we all feared, all governments feared – a wave, a surge that no health system could cope with, and ordinary people at the very moment they get it (Covid) unable to get any help from their health system.”

“In April I started an emergency appeal to get money to buy oxygen concentrators to send to India in its hour of need. I want you all to know that 741 of you were moved to join in and together we raised £45,401, enough to buy 70 high specification concentrators, machines that were capable of providing vital oxygen supply to people in their homes, with hospitals facing overwhelming demand. The oxygen concentrators were carried free of charge by Virgin Atlantic and all 70 machines were delivered to the Indian Red Cross in April and May for urgent distribution. Celebrating our activism, and many of you who donated, including significant sums from Virgin Unite, Park High School, Lizzie Bunn, Doug and Liz and all of you. Thank you for your humanity and looking forward to many adventures with you all when it is safe to do so”.
